ONCE upon a time it was only cyber-nerds who joined sites like Facebook and the chav-tastic Bebo. Now half the world is chatting about their tedious daily activities. Where the bold few go, others soon follow.

Renowned master technician Frank Massey is one of the first bold garage individuals to join the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF). And the government-lobbying trade association will hope that other independent garages follow his lead as it continues its ambitious plan to sign up 4,5000 members to its garage division over the coming few years.

Elsewhere, Motor Codes is taking the bull by the horns in its bid to win more consumer awareness. Fans of Fifth Gear will recognise bubbly TV presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson fronting its Golden Garages contest - a two-month search for workshops offering the best in customer care.

I've also been asked to join the judging panel and reckon it's a great chance to highlight the great work that garages do but that so many motorists simply don't recognise.

I’ve taken my (so far) trustworthy Seat Ibiza to some great garages over the last couple of years and, if truth be told, one or two that looked more trouble-prone than Amy Winehouse in charge of an off-licence. Anything that helps raise the public's appreciation of the difficult job the trade does is a valuable thing for everyone in the aftermarket.

Happy reading!
