Frank Massey lends his support to IAAF garage division in bid to boost independents' rights
FRANK Massey has joined forces with the IAAF to represent the interests of independent workshops.
The diagnostic expert – who writes for Aftermarket magazine – will sit on the council of the IAAF’s garage division.
The IAAF (Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation) is a new trade association formed from what was the Automotive Distribution Federation.
It has three divisions representing garages, distributors and lobbyists who will work to represent the rights of independent garages in the UK and EU parliaments.
Frank said a trade association representing only the views of independent businesses was important in obtaining access to technical information.
He hopes to help make VM technical information more freely available within the sector.
“I don’t see us at war with VMs but they have their own business to run. My view is that we should all have equal opportunities,” he said.
“There’s no reason why we should be treated differently. There’s certainly enough skill for vehicles to be repaired independently in the sector.
“The crunch is going to come when VMs turn round and say ‘we recognise you’ve got the right to repair the vehicles. Now prove you’ve got the skills’.”
Frank said his experience as a technician and trainer would help him communicate the challenges faced by repairers to politicians and decision-makers.
“I get a lot of feedback because of my travelling and training. Hopefully I can advise people on how they can overcome the problems posed by access to VM information.”
